FrieslandCampina is to build a new cheese warehouse in the Dutch town of following a fire earlier that “totally destroyed” the facility.
The Dutch dairy co-op said its board has approved an EUR30m (US$37.5m) investment for the warehouse. The new automated cheese warehouse will house storage capacity for 2,100 tons of cheese, cheese processing lines and a dispatching area. Work is expected to be completed by November 2015.

A fire in July destroyed the warehouse and part of a brine plant.
“Even before the fire was over, we’d already started making plans to resume production as soon as possible. Another team looked ahead to the long-term and that has resulted in the approved plan for full reconstruction and modernisation,” said Derrien Jansen, plant manager at Gerkesklooster.
The Gerkesklooster site produces specialist cheeses in addition to milk powder. About a third of the cheese is destined for export.
