Gathered Foods has taken its plant-based seafood brand Good Catch into Canada for the first time with a listing in the country’s largest retailer Loblaw.

The New York-based company’s range of seafood-alternative frozen appetisers and entrees will also be available in retailers Provigo and Dominion, including crab and fish cakes and fish-less burgers, all made with a protein-rich blend of peas, chickpeas, lentils, soy, fava beans and navy beans.

CEO Christine Mei, who replaced co-founder Chris Kerr in that role in July, said today (21 October): “Our team has been diligently working on expanding our international presence to meet the increasing demand for plant-based alternatives globally. We are so pleased to make our first entry into the Canadian market. 40% of Canadians are actively incorporating more plant-based foods into their diets.”

Gathered Foods entry to Canada follows its debut in the UK with supermarket group Tesco. During the summer it opened a new production facility in Ohio on the back of a US$36.8m funding round, which included food manufacturers General Mills and Maple Leaf Foods, along with a clutch of private-equity investors.
