General Mills said today (18 January) it will shut its plant in the English town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The US food giant had announced in October it had decided to close the facility, which manufactures baking mixes, as well as refrigerated and frozen dough products. The Jus-Rol pastry owner then started talks with staff representatives and union officials. It said today the closure would affect around 265 staff.

General Mills, which has announced a series of changes to its manufacturing network in North America, plans to consolidate the production at the Berwick site into other facilities.
Rab Donnelly, area organiser for the Usdaw union, said: “Since the initial announcement we have been in extensive consultation meetings with the company, looking at ways to avoid a closure. With great sadness for the workers on the site, their families and the wider community, this proved not to be possible and General Mills have today announced that the closure of the Berwick factory will go ahead. This has been an extremely difficult process for all concerned and is devastating news for the staff.”
