General Mills' moves to review its production network is to take in markets outside the US, with plans to shut plants in South Africa and Taiwan.
The company said it had made "a preliminary decision" to close a site in Johannesburg as part of a move to quit the South African foodservice sector.

The Pillsbury owner, meanwhile, said it had closed a leased manufacturing facility in Taiwan.
General Mills' decision on the plant in South Africa is subject to consultation with staff. If the site is closed, it would "impact production staff and a number of salaried employees", it added. The company declined to comment on the number of jobs that would be affected.
The Johannesburg plant in Linbro Park makes cake mixes; dough products, such as pizza; and baked goods, including muffins and croissants for foodservice customers.
Some 78 staff have been affected by the closure of the site in Kaohsiung in Taiwan. The facility made frozen dough products for the local market.
