Genius Foods, the UK-based gluten-free products manufacturer, has snapped up local gluten-free pastry products maker Chapel Foods.

The GBP3.5m (US$5.3m) deal will see Genius take on a company with which it launched a range of frozen pies last year.

In a statement, Genius said the transaction would help it “deepen” the UK and international distribution of the seven lines the two companies have teamed up to manufacture. The company said the acquisition would also provide capacity for more new products

Genius CEO Roz Cuschieri added: “The acquisition of Chapel Foods will allow us to accelerate our growth strategy in the frozen free-from sector, as we continue to respond to consumer demand for gluten-free convenience foods in line with those available in the mainstream aisle.”

Chapel Foods, based in the English town of Scunthorpe, manufactures products including pies, sausage rolls and quiche. It has 30 staff and has one production facility.
