Spanish food group Ebro Puleva has bought German pasta producer Birkel Teigwaren for EUR30m (US$41m).

Ebro Puleva said the acquisition, which remains subject to approval by German antitrust authorities, would give it an opportunity “to apply its expertise in the meal solutions business in the EU’s largest country”.

Birkel is the market leader in the German pasta segment with a share of 18%. It has an even stronger presence at the premium end of the market, and also produces pasta sauces. In the year to the end of September 2006, the company recorded revenues of more than EUR90m and EBITDA of EUR4.3m.

The company’s portfolio includes the Birkel, 3 Glocken, Schuele, Minuto and Nudel Up brands.

In addition to its leading position in Germany, Birkel is also present in the Baltic states and Russia, which Ebro Puleva said would give it “a foothold in high-growth international markets, which offer a superb growth opportunity for the group”.
