The German Federal Cartel Office gave the green light after investigating whether the deal would hinder consumer choice in the country.


Metro and Rewe struck a deal over the Extra business in January. Question marks had hung over Metro’s 245 Extra supermarkets since the autumn when the retail giant admitted it was weighing up its options for the business.


Metro said the sale would allow it to focus on its hypermarket chain Real. Rewe will take on some 245 stores, including some 61 franchise outlets in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Berlin.
