Lidl currently operates 140 supermarkets in the Netherlands, and plans a further 160 in the next few years.

Lidl and its German rival Aldi control a 10.1% market share in the Netherlands compared to 9.4% last year.

The introduction of the Euro currency is thought to have contributed to the retailers’ success, with both chains reducing their prices and attracting more customers.

Both Aldi and Lidl have both increased their turnover by branching out into non-food items such as computers and bicycles, reported the Dutch News Digest.
