Nordzucker said it has an EU sugar production quota of 1.15 million tonnes annually and an analysis of its current refineries showed it had 12,000 tonnes per day of surplus capacity.
Closing the Schleswig facility would reduce this surplus capacity to 3,100 tonnes per day.
Around 121 jobs will be lost as a result of the closure, reported Reuters.
