Rewe said Rehberg, former chairman of Nuremberg-based Norma, would “strengthen” the performance of its Penny stores, which account for annual turnover of almost EUR9bn (US$13.2bn).

“With this appointment, [Rewe’s] supervisory board underlines the importance of the discount division with a view to the further development of Rewe both in Germany and abroad,” said Heinz-Bert Zander, chairman of the supervisory board.

“We are pleased that we could win for this position Armin Rehberg, an extraordinarily successful top manager from among the top rank of the industry.”

Rehberg replaces Manfred Esser, head of purchasing at Rewe, who had also been in charge of the company’s discount stores on a temporary basis.
