German retail giant Rewe has expanded its private production facilities in the country with the opening of a “modern” bakery in the Bavarian town of Dachau.

The EUR80m (US$112.8m) production plant, which took 15 months to build, covers around 30,000 square meters and employs 400 staff. The facility will process 36,000 tonnes of flour per year to supply Rewe Markets and Penny stores with unpackaged bakery goods.

“The commissioning of the bakery is a milestone for the Rewe Group,” Manfred Esser, CEO of strategic purchasing at Rewe said yesterday (20 January). “As part of our overall strategy, we raise our profile in the very important category of bread and bakery products.”

The facility, Rewe said, uses 40% less energy than other bakeries and is an indication that it does “not just talk about sustainability”, but practices it “even in economically challenging times”.

The firm said that the opening of the new bakery is the “foundation to continue to remain on course for expansion”.
