The retailer told just-food today (3 April) that staff at a number of stores in the German province of Lower Saxony were monitored by a security firm against the wishes of the company.

Employees at stores run by Edeka subsidiary WEZ were monitored by a firm brought in to tackle a shoplifting problem at the outlets, an Edeka spokesman said.

The Edeka subsidiary has since cancelled its contract with the security firm.

The revelation comes just a week after Lidl, the German discount retailer, was forced to deny that it had used secret cameras in its stores to spy on staff.
