Global import duties on fish and fish products could be wiped out during the final phase of talks on the WTO’s seven-year-old Doha Development Round.

A special set of talks on fish import duties are being held within the overall Doha negotiations, gunning for completely free trade for many fish products.
However, there is no guarantee that sufficient critical mass will be secured to strike a deal – importing and exporting countries signing up must account for 90% of world trade in fish and fish products.
However, WTO insiders have told just-food a deal is possible. A fish talks negotiating paper said the amount of fish products included in any deal “should be comprehensive”.
Even if these talks fail, the general negotiations on industrial goods – which include fish – are expected to yield a deal that would significantly reduce import duties across the board.
