Organic food is healthier than its conventional counterparts, according to a EU-backed study.

The research, led by the UK’s Newcastle University, found a trend showing organic food is better for you, containing more antioxidants and less “baddies”.

Professor Carlo Leifert, the project’s co-ordinator, said there were some variations in the study and that more investigation is needed to find out why.

“What we’re really interested in is finding out why there is so much variability,” Prof Leifert was quoted as saying by UK newspaper The Guardian. “What in the agricultural system gives a higher nutritional content and less of the baddies in the food?”

The study’s results suggested the biggest difference between organic and conventional produce was in milk. Organic milk contained over 60% more antioxidants than standard milk, said the study, which lasted four years.
