The researchers at Athens Medical School said their study had demonstrated that dark chocolate allows blood vessels to dilate, which prevents the formation of potentially harmful clots, reported Reuters.

The researchers studied the blood vessels of 17 volunteers, some of who were given 100 grams of dark chocolate to eat, while others were given a non-chocolate substitute. In those that had eaten dark chocolate, the functioning of endothelium, which covers the inside surface of blood vessels, temporarily improved, but it did not improve in the non-chocolate group.

This is not the first piece of research to identify health benefits of dark chocolate. Last year researchers found that dark chocolate increases levels of antioxidants in the blood.
