Seattle-based coffeeshop giant Starbucks will open its first outlets in Athens this year, in a move that will see the company enter its sixth European market.

Already present in the UK, Starbucks has over the past year opened coffeeshops in Switzerland and Austria. The company has also announced plans to open in Spain and Germany.

Peter Maslen, president of Starbucks Coffee International, has said that all of the Starbucks outlets in Europe are performing above expectations.

Maslen added yesterday [Thurday] that as part of its plan to enter the Greek market, Starbucks will partner with Greek retailing group, the Marinopoulos Brothers.

Starbucks aims to open between ten and 12 outlets in Greece during its first year, although plans are in place to increase that number in time for start of the Olympic Games, which is due to be held in Athens in the summer of 2004.
