Grillo’s Pickles, a subsidiary of US business Irresistible Foods Group (IFG), is building a new manufacturing facility in Indiana.

In a statement announcing the move, the Boston-based company said it has broken ground on the 155,000-square-foot factory in Taylorsville.

The new plant, which Grillo’s Pickles described as its “new $54m food manufacturing operation” is aimed at meeting “growing national demand” for the company’s products. It will create up to 150 jobs in the region, the statement added.

According to the IFG website, Grillo’s Pickles began selling pickles from a wooden cart in downtown Boston in 2008. Its products are now available in grocery stores across the US.

Grillo’s Pickles president and CEO Adam Kaufman said: “Our pickles use a century-old family recipe and contain no artificial preservatives, Grillo’s Pickles are packed, shipped, and sold refrigerated.

“For our new production site, it was important to us to find a central US location with a skilled workforce and supportive business environment, and we are very excited to be in Bartholomew County, Indiana.”

The Taylorsville factory is located adjacent to a $175m bakery facility for King’s Hawaiian, another IFG subsidiary, the Grillo’s maker added.

In December 2023, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) announced the 300,000-square-foot King’s Hawaiian bakery would be operational by late 2026 or early 2027.

The facility is situated on an 88-acre site at the southeast corner of Exit 76 on I-65.

IFG vice-president of strategic operations and King’s Hawaiian chief operating officer Joe Leonardo said: “When we purchased the Bartholomew County site, we did so with thoughts about building it out in phases. Today’s announcement for Grillo’s Pickles confirms our strategy.”

In June last year, Bartholomew County officials approved a ten-year property tax phase-in for Grillo’s Pickles’ new building and equipment, which the pickle maker anticipates will help save around $1.2m.

The IEDC has also committed up to $1.4m in incentive-based tax credits to Grillo’s Pickles, based on the company’s investment and job creation plans.
