Gruma plans to invest US$50m over the next two years to open a new production facility in Russia, a move that will double the Mexican tortilla maker’s capacity in the country.

The company began construction of the facility, located in an industrial park in the city of Stupino Quadrat near Moscow, last week, a spokesperson confirmed.

When fully operational, the site will have an annual capacity of 31,500 tonnes. Around 250 people will work at the plant, which will manufacture wheat tortilla wraps, tortillas and tortilla chips. Production is scheduled to commence in late 2015.

The facility is Gruma’s second production plant in Russia and the group’s ninth facility in Europe.

In a statement, Gruma said that it has grown sales at a rate of 15% in Russia over the last three years. The company hopes to support this level of top line expansion through increased local production.

Gruma started operations in Russia in 2011, when it purchased local Mexican food company Soltntse Mexico.
