Mexican bakery giant Grupo Bimbo has announced plans to close two of its plants in the US as part of a redistribution of its production across the country.
Bimbo said production at its bakery in Lubbock, Texas, will end in early January, with production from the site switched to its Rockwall bakery in the same state. Bimbo’s Sunbury bakery in Pennsylvania will close at the end of January and production will be shifted to the company’s bakeries around the state.

Both bakeries produce bread and buns. Bimbo said Lubbock employs 75 staff and Sunbury some 67. “Human resources representatives will meet with impacted associates to discuss severance and other benefits, as well as resources available to assist associates,” the company said. “Consumers and customers will not be impacted as this change will not affect the availability of products.”
Wayne Sager, vice-president for region operations at Bimbo Bakeries USA, said: “After careful analysis and consideration, we determined it is most efficient to redistribute production to other bakeries in our system to better meet market demand.”
In May, Bimbo subsidiary Canada Bread said it was winding down operations at its bakery in North Bay, in Canada’s Ontario province, ahead of the facility’s closure in August. Canada Bread said the move was in response to “mounting competitive pressure to become more efficient”. It followed the closure in 2015 of a Canada Bread plant in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
