Grupo Bimbo said two employees at one of the Mexico-based bakery firm’s US plants have tested positive for Covid-19, although the facility in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania remains operational.

Bimbo Bakeries USA runs the plant, which manufactures Stroehmann Brothers bakery products and other brands. In accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the company has employed all the usual health and safety measures, including additional protocols to protect staff such as social distancing and enhanced sanitation controls, a spokesperson told just-food.

“We can confirm that two associates tested positive for Covid-19. While we cannot disclose additional details about the associates in accordance with privacy laws, we can share that we have notified all bakery staff and have directly contacted anyone with whom the individuals had close contact in accordance with CDC guidelines,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Bimbo Bakeries itself is also headquartered in Pennsylvania, with its corporate office located in Horsham Township.

Another plant owned by Bimbo Bakeries in the same state, situated in the city of Hazleton, was reopened last week to cater to increased demand for bread and buns as a result of the coronavirus outbreak as more people eat at home amid government lockdowns that have closed restaurants and other foodservice outlets.

The site is one of the former bakeries of Stroehmann Brothers, the business Grupo Bimbo acquired in 2008/09. The company expanded its footprint with a deal earlier this year for Lender’s Bagels, bought from US peer Conagra Brands.
