A Hormel Foods factory in Stockton in California is set to close in February, the US group has announced.

The company told just-food it expects the site, which makes products including Hormel chilli and Dinty Moore stew, to shut at the end of February.

Hormel said production would move to other sites in the US.

“The decision to cease operations at our Stockton plant was a very difficult one because of its impact on our valued team members who work there,” Donald Temperley, vice president of Hormel’s grocery products operations, said yesterday (25 November). “Moving the production to our Atlanta, Georgia and Beloit, Wisconsin facilities is a business decision based on the scale, production capacity and efficiency available at those locations.”

The company did not respond to a request for comment on the impact on jobs.

Hormel yesterday published its results for the year and for the fourth quarter to 26 October.

The group saw sales and profits rise in both periods, although annual segment operating earnings from its grocery products arm – its third-largest by sales – fell 8.7%. Hormel said segment operating income from the division tumbled by more than a fifth during the fourth quarter amid pressure from meat commodity costs.
