Hungary’s competition authority, GVH, announced today (12 October) that it has fined Masterfoods EUR171,000 (US$214,464) for “misleading advertising”.

According to GVH the company broke rules prohibiting the unfair manipulation of consumer choice, as enshrined in the Hungarian Competition Act.


GVH said that the advertising campaign and product labelling of Masterfoods’ Chappi dog food were misleading to consumers, implying that the dog food contained a significant proportion of meat. However, in actuality the product only contained 4% meat while the beef version was made using only blood – no meat at all.
