Pick, the Hungarian meat processor, is reported to be considering the acquisition of the Szeged Cannery, which was closed in January this year. Pick joins other bidders including Csongradi, a cooperative with 60 members including municipalities and major cities. Last week Csongradi applied for a loan from the Ministry of Agriculture to raise funds for its bid.

The Szeged Cannery, currently in the hands of the Limpex group, a subsidiary of the Hungarian Development Bank. Most of its employees have already been made redundant. The company is one of four canneries belonging to Limpex.


A decision on the sale of the cannery is expected next week.
