Spar’s Hungarian business has received clearance from the European Commission’s competition watchdog to buy rival supermarket chain Plus Hungary.

Following an investigation into the merger the Commission concluded that the deal would not diminish competition in the market.
“The combined firm would continue to face several strong and effective competitors in food retail with significant market shares both at national and local levels,” the Commission said in a statement.
“The proposed transaction would not lead to a significant increase of buyer power for the combined firm vis-a-vis its suppliers,” the statement concluded.
