US retailer Wal-Mart is thinking about buying the seven Cora hypermarkets of French retailer Louis Delhaize in Hungary, according to a report in business weekly Figyelő, cited by the Budapest Buseinss Journal.
Cora, which competes with Tesco and Auchan in the Hungarian market, closed the year 2003 with 100bn forint (US$490m) revenue and a Ft 3.4bm forint loss.
According to Figyelő, Wal-Mart may also consider buying Auchan. Wal-Mart registered a subsidiary in Hungary with 3m forint capital in 2003.
