Metro Group is aiming to have 100 cash-and-carry outlets in 36 cities in India. The retailer has already invested US$100m in its Indian operations over the last four years. Next week, the company will start its operations in Mumbai and Kolkata.

“We are not moderating our expansion plans,” said Alan Clayton, operations director for Metro Cash & Carry India. “The protests are done by those who have vested interests in keeping prices high. We will have stores pan-India.”

Clayton added: “We will face competition but there is enough room for many. The idea is to open several stores in the areas that have a population of 5m people.”
