Indian bakery and dairy group Britannia Industries is preparing for an “aggressive” international push – and has handed MD Vinita Bali the task of driving its expansion overseas.

Bali will focus on Britannia’s international operations and on business development. COO Varun Berry, the former boss of PepsiCo’s business in India, will lead Britannia’s domestic operations.

“The new structure will help Britannia grow faster in India while it also focuses on growth in the international markets and addresses new business opportunities for the company,” Bali said. Britannia’s business outside India accounts for only 10% of revenues, with the Middle East its main overseas market.

Britannia said Bali would look to “create adjacencies and new opportunties” to lead it from being a bakery and dairy group to “an all-embracing food company”.

Indian conglomerate The Wadia Group owns Britannia. Nusil Wadia, the head of The Wadia Group, is also chairman of Britannia. He said: “With these changes we are preparing Britannia for high growth in Britannia’s India operations by catering to the changing food habits of the evolving Indian consumer and pursuing opportunities for growth in the overall food domain, here and abroad.”

Last week, Britannia Industries reported an increase in annual profits on the back of improved sales.
