While European, US and foreign aid agencies’ scepticism is urging a ban on the use of DDT, Lal argues, “if India foolishly signs this convention it will seriously damage the nation’s health. DDT is the most cost-effective controller of diseases spread by bugs like flies and mosquitoes that has ever been produced.”
Because of this, DDT has been credited with the reduction in malaria incidences from 75m in 1951 to 50,000 some ten years later.
Similarly, Lal added that the production of GM crops is also vital to India’s future; providing major economic benefits with increased yields of disease resistant stock that do not require as much pesticide.
