Indian frozen foods exporter Himalya International has signed a deal to sell its products domestically through Reliance Retail.

Himalya, which has exported food to the US for a decade, is looking to tap into growing demand among India’s burgeoning middle classes for more “premium” products.

The company will sell “Italian-style speciality cheeses and premium sweets” under a namesake brand. Other products will be sold under the Reliance brand Dairy Pure.

Reliance, an arm of Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, is looking to expand its store network across India.

However, its ambitious plans have been hit by protests from small traders across the country, fearful of losing their jobs to the growth of organised retail in India.
