According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the farmers congregated in the city of Lucknow following a decision by state authorities to close down 10 new Reliance supermarkets 11 days ago. The closures were made because of law and order problems the state said. However, the existence of the stores had been heavily criticised by small traders, who say that the new stores will hurt small shop owners.

According to the report, as a consequence of the closures Reliance Industries Ltd , has shelved plans to open hundreds of air-conditioned supermarkets across northern and eastern India.

The farmers made a human chain along the main thoroughfare of Lucknow, and chanted: “We want the reopening of all retail stores!” They argue that the Western-style supermarkets will allow them to maek a more profitable living.
