Indian food group Himalya International has expanded its yoghurt business with some of the country’s largest retailers.

The company plans to supply natural fruit yoghurt under contract to retailers in India’s major cities. The move follows the launch of plain natural yoghurt last year.

At present, Himalya is manufacturing ten tonnes per month of strawberry and banana fruit yoghurt and, with a favourable response to a soft launch made three months ago, it plans to boost production to three tonnes a day by next year.

“Natural fruit yogurt, introduced for the first time in the Indian market by us, is seen as a healthy dessert by the health-conscious Indians in the metros [major cities such as Mumbai and Delhi],” said Himalya International chairman and CEO Man Mohan Malik.

Targeted retailers include Metro Cash & Carry, Bharti Walmart, Reliance Retail and Big Bazaar.

Despite exports to the US, a key market for Himalya, declining during the recession, the company, which also makes frozen vegetables, cheese, bread appetisers, ethnic sweets and neutraceuticals, grew turnover by almost 24% and profits by almost 19% in the 2009/10 fiscal year.
