The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) are in negotiations to utilise the vitamin A enriched Golden Rice technology in India.
Half the world’s population of people suffering from micro-nutrient deficiency live in India. Around 230m children around the world suffer with vitamin A deficiency, which can lead to learning disability and blindness. In India alone 3.5 lakh schoolchildren become partially or totally blind every year.
Golden Rice was developed by Swiss and German scientists, and now the DBT hopes to “develop our own Vitamin-A rice for masses in the next five to six years,” explained department secretary Dr. Manju Sharma.
