Indian conglomerate ITC has confirmed it plans to open dairy plants in seven Indian states – with the first site set to open in Bihar before the end of the year.

India’s highly competitive dairy sector has respected brands such as Amul. However, ITC is about to enter the market with a facility in the city of Munger, in India’s north-eastern state of Bihar.

The group plans to set up dairy plants in six other Indian states – Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.

Reflecting on the initial move in Bihar, ITC said its product portfolio would help it stand out from the competition. “We can beat competition because our new range of differentiated, value-added dairy products are based on extensive consumer research,” a spokesperson said. However, the spokesperson would not give further details about the planned products.

The spokesperson insisted ITC was building on its access to 1m milk animals and 4m farmers under its “integrated rural development programme” and argued the company’s entry into the dairy sector is a “natural progression.”

In Munger, ITC would be working with more than 30,000 farms, spreading best practice in animal husbandry, the spokesperson said.
