Canadian frozen potato products  company McCain Foods is to build a C$18m (US$14.3m)  potato processing plant in India, north of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat province, according to the Canadian Press agency.

“Our new production facility in India will help supply our business in the country and across the Indian subcontinent,” said Dale Morrison, president of McCain Foods Ltd. “This factory is designed to expand as we build our business and grow the market for frozen potato products”


Construction will begin next month and is scheduled for completion by July 2006. The new plant is expected to employ up to 125 people.


Potatoes supplying the new facility will be purchased from independent Gujarat farmers.
