The Indian Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, has said that India could emerge as a major player in organic production and exports on the world market.
At an international conference on Indian organic products, Rudy said global trade in organic products was growing phenomenally and that India has great potential in the organic sector.
Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh said a Rs920m (US$19m) national project on organic farming is to be launched, including the creation of a body to formulate national standards in order to boost organic exports.
As part of the project, 50 model organic farms are to be set up in the country, while assistance would also be provided for setting up units to commercially produce organic inputs such as bio-fertilisers and waste compost, reported The Hindu.
