The operator of India’s Hyderabad International Airport, GHIAL, has unveiled a project to set up a “world-class” Centre for Perishable Cargo (CPC) serving the domestic market and major international markets.

GHIAL’s chief commercial officer Viswanath Attaluri said the proposed facility would provide a boost to the movement of perishables as well as to horticultural activity in Andhra Pradesh, South India and at a national level, making farmers more competitive in the present WTO (World Trade Organization) regime.
The centre is also expected to give a further boost to modern retailers who need to establish national supply chain transportation links.
The CPC will be designed to handle 13,000 tonnes annually of perishable cargo in the first phase of development, which runs until 2011. The capacity will be raised to 25,000 tonnes per annum in the second phase, which runs until 2013-14.
