India’s Reliance Retail plans to open “mini-mart” versions of its hypermarkets, just-food understands.
Reliance is finalising its plans to launch the smaller stores in India’s second-tier cities, a source close to the company told just-food today (5 December).
The source said Reliance is still carrying out market research on how many stores will be opened and in which cities.
The company, which plans to spend US$6bn on expansion over the next four years, has seen its retail ambitions take a hit after opposition from local traders wary of competition in India’s fast-growing retail sector.
Reliance has seen its Reliance Fresh stores closed in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, on the order of local authorities after protests from small shopkeepers.

The source added that Reliance plans to continue selling fresh produce in the Reliance Fresh outlets despite some political opposition to the company’s expansion.
A source close to Reliance told just-food that local reports suggesting Reliance would stop selling fruit and vegetables in the stores were “wrong and untrue”.
