Indian conglomerate Sanjay Ghodawat Group is adding to its food operations with moves into the rice and snacks categories.

Sanjay Ghodawat Group, which already offers table salt and edible oils, will be investing INR950m (US$15.7m) during this fiscal year launching rice, snacks and packaged water.

The company will launch a brand – Star555 – under which it will sell Indian snacks, potato chips and corn based products. The spokesperson said the move was a “natural choice” given the group’s presence in the FMCG segment and its “strong distribution network”.

The spokesperson said the group’s move into rice was prompted by demand from a growing middle class population that “does not mind the additional expense on a staple product”.

Initially, the products will be launched in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa.
