The GM groundnut, which is likely to undergo controlled condition field trials next year, has been developed to resist the Indian peanut clump virus which is common in India and causes crop losses.

Icrisat expects it to be three years before commercialisation of the GM groundnut, reported the Financial Times.

Groundnut is India’s most important oilseed, but production levels have been suffering because of the damaging virus.
