Leading UK grocer Tesco is relocating 420 support jobs from the UK to India in a move to cut costs.
The popular business hub of Bangalore, where many UK companies have set up call centres, is the chosen destination for Tesco’s new Indian support operations. The company already operates a small office there. The news affects support staff in Cardiff, Dundee and Welwyn Garden City, although Tesco said that it would be able to offer staff alternative UK positions, as long as they were flexible, Reuters reported.
The availability of cheap, well-educated and English-speaking labour is the main reason that many companies are relocating support functions to India.
Tesco is the UK’s largest private-sector employer.
