The Indonesian Importers Association (IIA) today (15 February) followed in the footsteps of Middle Eastern and North African Muslim countries by launching a boycott of Danish goods in protest against the depiction of the prophet Muhammad in Danish newspapers.

The boycott will affect various Danish imports to Indonesia including dairy products, baby formula and beef, IIA chairman Amirudin Saud told Dow Jones Newswires.


“The (import) ban will stay in effect until the Danish government apologises to the Muslim community,” an association statement said.


Danish products constituted approximately 1% of imports worth US$73.8m in 2005. However, the extent that a boycott of Danish imports will affect Danish sales in Indonesia remains unclear, as many Danish goods are produced in Indonesia under license.
