Greenpeace has accused retail giants Wal-Mart, Tesco, Carrefour and Auchan of driving rainforest destruction and pushing tigers and orang-utans to extinction by buying products from Asia Pulp and Paper.

The environmental group has focused its efforts on Asia Pulp and Paper, a division of Sinar Mas, with its report ‘How Sinar Mas is Pulping the Planet‘. It claims that APP is still contributing the destruction of forests, bringing important biodiversity toward extinction, and if it continues, will threaten Indonesia’s efforts to tackle climate change.

According to the report, APP has repeatedly claimed it is on a responsible ‘path towards sustainability’ and will soon have no need to pulp Indonesian forests to meet its fibre requirements. However, “APP never intended to source its pulpwood from plantations alone after 2009, in spite of the promise it made to its customers and other stakeholders,” the report argues.

Following publication of the report yesterday, Carrefour will end its contract with APP and Tesco will end its contract at the end of the year.

Additionally, Kraft Foods has stopped purchasing APP paper and packaging products, while Nestlé and Unilever are implementing new policies that will hold the company to stricter levels of accountability.

Wal-Mart and Auchan have not yet responded to calls for comment.
