PT Pacific Food Indonesia, the manufacturer of the popular snacks Smax and Double Decker in Indonesia, has admitted that it has started using monosodium glutamate (MSG) in its products, but failed to state this in ingredients labelling on packaging “for technical reasons”.

A spokesman for the company, Oetje Palar, said that the products without MSG on the labelling were old stock that would be replaced with new stock that included the correct labelling, reported the Jakarta Post.
Some studies show that people can react adversely to MSG and develop an MSG complex, as well suffering allergic reactions, nausea, headaches, migraines, asthma, and heart and neurological problems.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets a maximum daily intake of MSG of five milligrams per day. However, on average Americans still consume about 11 milligrams of MSG per day.
