French business publication La Lettre de l’Expansion had reported that Carrefour was preparing to open a hypermarket in Tehran in partnership with Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim (MAF). The move was expected to take place later this year.

However, a spokesperson for the group told just-food that the retail giant currently has “no plans” for the market.

The statement is an apparent U-turn from the French retail giant. Last May, Carrefour had told just-food that it and MAF would open the retailer’s first hypermarket in Iran.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson did today confirm that Carrefour is working with MAF to open an outlet in Syria, where the property developer plans to build a US$1.7bn hotel, residential and commercial complex outside of Damascus, the country’s capital.

MAF indicated last October that the mixed use development would be “anchored by a Carrefour hypermarket”.

The store is scheduled to open later this year.
