Discount grocery retailers Aldi and Lidl have gained market share in Ireland, while supermarket chains Superquinn and Dunnes Stores have lost out.


According to the latest industry data for the 12 weeks to 28 March, UK-based supermarket chain Tesco slightly increased its market share to 24.7%, maintaining its leading position in the Irish grocery market, reported the Irish Independent.


Superquinn’s market share fell to 8.7%, compared to 9% in the year-earlier period, while Musgrave’s market share slid to 22.5% from 22.7%.


German discount chains Aldi and Lidl had a combined market share of 5.1%, compared to 5% a year earlier.
