The redundancies were understood to have been announced to the company’s 800 employees in CityWest, Dublin yesterday (29 January).

The job losses are expected in Glanbia’s sales, marketing and financial divisions.

The company reportedly said it will “work with unions and employee representatives to try and secure the redundancies on a voluntary basis”.

Earlier this month, Glanbia posted a 17% rise in full-year earnings during 2008 – but warned of a “very challenging” year ahead.

In a trading update, Glanbia said annual adjusted earnings per share had grown 17% last year. Only Glanbia’s Irish food ingredients missed expectations, the company said, with the “steep decline” in global dairy prices hitting the unit.

Officials at Glanbia could not be reached for immediate comment as just-food went to press.
