The money raised from the chewing gum tax will go towards the hefty cost of cleaning the sticky substance from pavements across the country.

Environment minister Martin Cullen is expected to reveal a detailed report by consultants McIver Consulting on how to introduce the levies, reported the Irish Independent. The report will also outline proposals to introduce levies on polystyrene fastfood packaging and ATM receipts.

Once the proposals have been published, there is likely to be a four-week public consultation period before they are brought to Cabinet, the newspaper said.
