UK discount operator Poundland has announced plans to expand into Europe through the opening of six stores in Ireland.

Four stores, which will trade under the name Dealz, will open in October, the retailer said today (2 August). It plans to have six stores open by the end of its financial year in March.

Poundland, which has 347 stores in the UK, has been planning a move into Europe for the past year. In February, the firm told just-food that it planned to open some 50 new stores in the 2011/12 financial year but did not specify where.

The first four stores are expected to create around 120 jobs and will give Poundland around 25,000 sq ft of retail selling space. Products on offer in the stores will include lines from Kellogg, Cadbury and own-brand ranges, as well as locally-sourced products.

“We know that there is an appetite from Irish consumers for a discount retailer that offers real value,” said Poundland CEO Jim McCarthy. “Just like Poundland in the UK, we’re anticipating busy stores from day one with queues of value-savvy shoppers.”

Dealz will run as an integrated part of Poundland, with the same board and management team.
