Retail Ireland has voiced its opposition to the implementation of a proposed grocery code of practice, which is being considered by Irish regulators.
The proposed code would oversee the dealings between Irish retailers and their suppliers, some of whom have claimed that they are being squeezed by the supermarkets.

However, in a submission to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Retail Ireland claimed that a mandatory code would limit competition and result in higher prices for the consumer.
“The suggested code will inhibit further falls in food prices in these difficult times of declining household incomes, because it will make it more difficult to obtain best value from suppliers,” the retail body argued.
