The company said it will itself absorb the new tax to be levied on items such as groceries, homecare products and cosmetics. Chief executive Feargal Quinn said his company will save some of the necessary money by adopting the environmental levy on plastic bags: “The environmental tax provides Superquinn with a chance to bring benefits to the customer and cost advantages to the company.”

The environmental scheme is expected to save the company €1m (US$865,000) per year, which contributes to its ability to hold the VAT rate at 20%.
